"Tabula Europae VI", Munster, Sebastian
Period: 1542 (circa)
Color: Hand Color
13 x 10 inches
33 x 25.4 cm
This is a nice Ptolemaic map of Italy including Corsica and parts of Sardinia and Sicily. Typical of the period, the map shows only the rivers and major cities with rope-like mountain ranges. A flaming Mount Aetna is depicted in Sicily. Large cartouches with Latin text describing the region fill the Mediterranean and a ship sails in the Adriatic Sea. Latin text and woodcut illustration on verso.
Worm tracks along centerfold have been repaired with some facsimile in the text cartouche.
