In the latter part of the nineteenth century the U.S. and Canada together granted more than 163 million acres of public land to private companies for the purpose of building railroads. The Northern Pacific received its grants between 1864 and 1893 in the typical checkerboard pattern - for each mile of railroad built the company received the odd sections of land within forty miles of the route. This set of maps shows the disposition of these lands in Montana and northern Wyoming, with parcels sold, under contract and unsold. An interesting set of charts for anyone interested in railroads and western emigration.
Printed on heavy cardstock. Some creasing and a few tears repaired with tissue on verso.
