This fine pocket map shows the United States west to the Mississippi River and a little beyond to include parts of Texas and Indian Territory. It is very detailed and features eight insets; namely the Vicinity of Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, Charleston, Boston, New York, Cincinnati, Albany, plus the Vicinity of the Falls of Niagara. The labyrinth of canals and early railroads are clearly shown and finely colored. This series of maps, first published in 1832, was designed for the market represented by the burgeoning number of travelers and new immigrants. The maps were printed on thin bank note paper and folded so they could be carried easily for quick reference while traveling. This map, dated 1841 in the title, folds into original green cloth embossed and gilt covers (dated 1836). The map was engraved on steel by J.H. Young & D. Haines and bears the copyright date of 1834. Complete with 78 page index to the map that lists railroads, steamboat, stagecoach, and railroad routes, and more.

The lot also includes "An Accompaniment to Mitchell's Reference and Distance Map of the United States" dated 1836. This book is an index to all " …towns, &c in the union." The "General View of the United States" paints a portrait of the physical geography, natural resources, commerce, and government in the 1830's. There are interesting articles for the states, with population, railroads, canals and stage route listings. Missouri, Oregon and Ouisconsin territories are also described. Hardbound in marbled paper with calf spine and tips, 342 pp.
