"The Matthews-Northrup Up to Date Map of Tennessee", Matthews-Northrup Co
Period: 1896 (published)
Color: Printed Color
20 x 15.2 inches
50.8 x 38.6 cm
A rarely seen folding pocket map produced by the same company that created the Century atlases in the period 1897-1905. The map was produced with the same remarkably precise engraving and coloring style. The eastern part of Tennessee is presented in a large inset. The index appears on the verso. Folds into small red linen-like paper wrappers noting this is part of the "indexed vest-pocket series." This was part of Matthew-Northrup's attempt to compete with Rand, McNally's vest pocket series. Evidently the project was not a commercial success, as only this one and one of the United States appear in any price guides or other sources. A scarce pocket map in near fine condition.
Map very good with a couple of tiny fold intersection separation and short marginal split closed on verso, else fine. Covers very good with very minor rubbing to folded edges.
