The first, by Earl B. McElfresh with foreword by Stephen W. Sears, is a thorough examination of Civil War maps, mapmaking and mapmakers, documenting the techniques and travails of the mapmaker in the field. Lively anecdotes plus and examination of the cartographer's art in the battlefield. History Book Club edition, 1999, 272 pp., notes, bibliography, index, 180 illustrations, 150 in full-color, many never before reproduced. Hardbound with dust jacket. The latter by Thomas B. Allen is lavishly illustrated with outstanding color and rare black & white photographs presented in the National Geographic style with a great text about the Civil War. Maps, drawings and modern photos by Sam Abell throughout. Book has attached navy silk ribbon still folded. First edition, 1992, National Geographic Society, 320 pp. Deluxe blue padded leather binding with silver lettering on the spine with the flags imprinted in silver on front cover. Silver finish foredges.
