L' Abbé Expilly was a French diplomat, traveler and geographer. He produced a number of maps and atlases in the late 18th century including this miniature atlas. Includes five foldout maps: Europe, France, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. The maps are finely engraved by Martinet with fancy cartouches. 460 pp. inclusive of several tables providing the distance from Paris to cities throughout the world, exchange rates, prices of wines, etc. Contemporary mottled calf, re-backed incorporating part of the original gilt spine, marbled endpapers and marbled edges. Ownership inscription to front endpaper and half-title. Perforated stamp of the Free Library of Philadelphia on title page, their ink stamps on verso of title page and first page of preface.
