"L'Atlas en Abrege, ou Nouvelle Description du Monde…", Peeters, Jacques
Period: 1692 (dated)
Color: Black & White
4.75 x 7.5 inches
12.1 x 19.1 cm
A rare, complete and fine atlas with all pages and maps, title page and frontispiece present. The map of the world and the America map features California as an Island. The four-page description of America is amended by a 12-line manuscript annotation in Latin. The last few pages are a description of the seven wonders of the world. All maps are good to fine, mostly very good. A few scattered foxing spots, some with water stain in lower margins and four with short separations in bottom centerfold. Lutzenburgi has a fold separation plus a short clean tear from fold into map. Brown ink inscription in beautiful calligraphy on front and back endpapers, as well as an additional handwritten Latin poem opposite page 20. The inscription on front endpaper is a dedication to the mapmaker Delisle. Full original calf boards with raised, gilt-stamped spine. 82 pp, preface, title, frontispiece, table, 43 maps. List calls for only 41 maps, but this issue has two additional also by Peeters. Binding with shelf wear. Back cover is worse with abrading leading to several holes through calf and some loss along edges. Signatures are tight. Maps and text are generally clean.

About the last half of pages have small marginal worm track, not affecting maps or text except on two pages just touching a letter. Some pages with slight damp stain in lower margin, occasional light foxing spots, mostly to text pages.
