This book shows some of the finest sea charts, from the earliest 15th century examples, drawn and painted on parchment , to 18th century hand-colored copperplate engravings. All of these works are superbly reproduced in full color and printed with near facsimile quality. Accompanying the illustrations is a thorough commentary by leading Dutch authority Robert Putman. The text also discusses the invention of the compass by the Arabs in the 12th century and explains the projection of the terrestrial globe on a flat surface. 143pp., 80 full color illustrations.
