Title in ribbon above map. The map was originally drawn by Martin Waldseemuller and revised and reduced by Laurent Fries in 1522. Latin text on verso flanked by ornate woodblock designs, which are said to be the work of Hans Holbein the younger and Urs Graf. This example is from the edition issued by Michael Servetus who was burned on the stake in 1553 for heresy by the order of Calvin and many of his books were burned, resulting in the rarity of this issue.
