Beautiful copper engraved map of the Caribbean that also depicts the eastern coast of North America from the Chesapeake through the Gulf of Mexico, with Mexico, Central America and the northern coast of South America. Cartographically drawn on the extremely rare chart of Hessel Gerritsz circa 1631, with Blaeu adding the west coast of Central America and naming Virginia. This issue has French text and page number on verso, making it an issue between 1638-1658. Lovely dedication and scale cartouches, rhumb lines, compass roses and sailing ships make this a very attractive map.
