First, by Piers Pennington, is the story of the world's greatest adventures, told through the lives of the explorers and lavishly illustrated. Each chapter deals with an age or area of discovery, from the early Egyptian sea voyages to the modern race for the South Pole. Bloomsbury Books, 1989, 336 pp., illustrated endpapers, colored plates and maps. 4to, hardbound, with illustrated dustjacket. Second with text by Gail Roberts, maps by Geographical Projects, and introduction by Sir Francis Chichester, tells the story of man's gradual discovery of the world through detailed maps charting each explorer's routes. The maps are linked and amplified by the text, which describes the discovers, their motives, and their explorations into the unknown world. Crown Publishers, Inc, 1973, 192 pp., pictorial endpapers. 4to, hardbound with laminated pictorial dustjacket.
