This fascinating Japanese board game was published a few years after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and was created to teach students about physics while also sending a powerful message of peace. The game starts at bottom left and features four cartoon characters: Proton, Neutron, Electron and Meson. Play continues around the board in a spiral, ending at the center, and is similar in style to snakes and ladders. Along the way, students learn about particle physics, the discovery of X-rays, nuclear fission, and other topics. The center of the game board celebrates the Japanese physicist Hideki Yukawa, who won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1949 and is depicted at left, and Alfred Nobel. Above them are the four characters riding doves and surrounded by hearts with a banner stating "No More Hiroshimas." The characters hold balloons with another message: "nuclear power should only be used for purposes of peace." This example is accompanied by the original pictorial sleeve in which it was issued. Published by Nihon Hatsumei Shinbunsha.
