This fascinating bird's-eye view of Lake Texcoco and the Valley of Mexico appeared in the second volume of Johann Friedrich Schroter's Algemeine Geschichte der Lander und Volker von America. It is based on an engraving from Antonio de Solis's Histoire de la Conquete de Mexique (1691). It presents a decidedly fantastical view of Tenochtitlan (here identified as Mexico) and the nearby altepeme, with a European flavor to the architecture. The key along the bottom identifies dams, an aqueduct, and city-states, including Texcoco, Culhuacan, and Xochimilco. Tenochtitlan, of course, is centered. At bottom left, the Spanish approach.
