This gorgeous hand-colored lithograph depicts two "blue-throated groove-bills," a newly discovered species at the time of publication. It was published in updated edition of one of Gould's most noted and rare publications, A Monograph of the Ramphastidae, or Family of Toucans (1852-54). The species is native to Central America and the far northwestern reaches of Colombia. John Gould (1804-81) created some of the most beautiful bird prints ever produced and was known throughout the world as "The Bird Man." Drawn and lithographed by Gould & Henry Constantine Richter. Printed by Hullmandel & Walton. This example is accompanied by a page of descriptive text from the original publication.
