A. Western America in 1846-1847 - The Original Travel Diary of Lieutenant J.W. Abert Who Mapped New Mexico for the United States Army..., by Lieutenant J.W. Abert, published 1966 (10.4 x 14.0"). Edited by John Galvin, this fine book reproduces the original travel diary of Lieutenant James W. Abert of the Topographical Engineers. Previously unpublished, Abert's daily field notes detail his expedition with the Army Corps of Topographical Engineers from Fort Leavenworth to Santa Fe and back during 1846-47. It is filled with excellent details of the land and its inhabitants and lovely color illustrations from his sketchbook. There are two fold-out reproductions of classic maps: Map of the Territory of New Mexico by Abert and Peck and Map of Mexico & California by Julius Hutawa. First edition, limited to 3,000 copies. 116 pages. Hardbound in tan cloth with gilt title on spine and vignette on front cover, glassine dust jacket. Condition: Near fine. (A)

B. Exploring the West, by Herman J. Viola, published 1987 (9.3 x 11.2"). Nice book with the accounts of the soldiers, geologists, surveyors, engineers, naturalists, and cartographers who opened the West. It includes Zebulon Pike, Jedediah Smith, Joseph Walker, Kit Carson, John Wesley Powell, Fremont, and many others. Lavishly illustrated with full color plates and black-and-white photographs. Hardbound in brown cloth with illustrated dust jacket. 256 pages. Condition: Hinge is starting. Covers are very good with minor shelf wear. (B+)

C. The Real Wild West - The 101 Ranch and the Creation of the American West, by Michael Wallis, published 1999 (6.4 x 9.6"). "Ten years in the making, this epic story of the 101 Ranch is nothing less than a sweeping history of the West of myth and reality." Wallis' wonderful history book spins the tale of the 101 Ranch Wild West show. Includes several photographs, classic show posters, and other illustrations, some in full color. 652 pages. Hardbound with olive boards and black cloth spine with gilt titles, and an illustrated dust jacket. Signed by the author. Condition: Like new. (A+)
