Shows Failed British Groundnut Scheme

"East Africa - Land of Sunshine",

This delightful tourist map is filled with images of the animals one might see while on safari in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanganyika, a colonial territory governed by the United Kingdom from 1916-1961. A large sun shines over East Africa and its many attractions, including Lake Victoria, Mount Kilimanjaro, Selous Game Sanctuary, and the ruins of Gedi. Travel information, such as roads and railroad lines, are also shown. Of particular interest in the map is a banner denoting the location of the Groundnut Scheme in Tanganyika, a failed attempt by the British government to cultivate peanuts. The project was abandoned in 1951, and this notation was removed in the later (and smaller) edition of this map published in 1954. The map was created by Dennis Owen Mathews for the East Africa Tourist Travel Association and printed in Scotland by Robert MacLehose & Co., Ltd. On verso are photographic images of the people and animals of East Africa along with general information for tourists.
