This incredible engraving depicts the Battle of Scheveningen (also known as the Battle of Texel or the Battle of Ter Heide). It was the final naval battle of the First Anglo-Dutch War. It took place in August 1653 between the vast English and Dutch fleets. The English navy of 120 ships, under General George Monck, blockaded the Dutch coast and captured many merchant vessels. The combined Dutch armada consisting of Admiral Maarten Tromp's 100 ships and Admiral Witte de With's 27 ships attempted to lift the blockade off the island of Texel. During the battle Admiral Tromp was killed and the Dutch were forced to retreat. However, the English sustained severe damage and had to return to port to refit and were unable to maintain the blockade. The battle resulted in renewed peace negotiations, leading to the Treaty of Westminster.
