This is a superb view of Hamburg along the Alster River depicting a comet in the sky that occurred around July 6-16, 1665. The comet is shown in the sky with a line drawn to the waterfront house of Stanislaw Lubienietz (1623-1675), a Polish astronomer, who observed the comet. A banner at top right shows the various depictions of the comet that were observed over several nights. Above the city are two putti holding the coat of arms of Hamburg with the Latin motto: "Give peace in our time, O Lord." Drawn by Hans Martin Winterstein and engraved by Stoopendaal. This engraving was published in Lubienietz' Theatrum Cometicum, which was a history of comets beginning with those mentioned in the bible and ending with comets that Lubienietz witnessed himself in 1664 and 1665.
