Confederate Broadside of the First Major Battle of the Civil War

"Seat of War Manassas and Its Vicinity",

This scarce, separately-issued broadside was published just after the first major battle of the Civil War at Bull Run, also known as the Battle of First Manassas. The broadside features a woodcut map of the region surrounding Manassas, extending east to Washington, D.C. and the Potomac River, and west to Snickersville (now Bluemont) and Warrenton. The battlegrounds of July 18 (Battle of Blackburn's Ford) and July 21 (Bull Run) are shown along with rivers, roads, railroads, and mountains in the area. Below the map are four columns of text describing the various routes and some of the movements of the armies, including "the 'Cub Run Bridge' where the enemy sustained such loss in their flight." The map was drawn and engraved by J. Baumgarten and published by a Richmond Newspaper, Richmond Enquirer, and sold at their offices. Provenance: William Reese Company.

Printed on blue paper with extraneous folds and a 2" separation along the fold at top center. There are several stains, small holes, and tiny tears also along the folds, primarily at the fold intersections.
