This lovely view shows the fortified town of Asilah, Morocco, on the Barbary Coast of Africa. At the time of publication, the town was under Spanish control. In the foreground, ships fill the waters of the Atlantic. Dapper's important Description of Africa was one of the most important seventeenth century works about the continent, compiled from contemporary eye-witness sources.
