This map of eastern China is drawn largely from Blaeu's maps compiled by Jesuit Father Martino Martini who traveled through the region between 1643 and 1650. The map depicts the provinces of Hunan (Huquang), Jiangxi (Kiangsi), Zhejiang (Che Kiang), and Fujian (Fokien), and extends to include the northern tip of Taiwan (Formosa). A legend at bottom right identifies cities and towns of various sizes, forts, and mines for gold, silver, tin and iron. Shanghai is named Sungkiang. The title cartouche is flanked by Chinese men and the scale of miles cartouche is surrounded by putti. Originally issued by Jan Jansson, this is the later re-issue by Gerard Valk and Peter Schenk.
