This informative and handsomely designed reference traces the history of the capital of the United States through views of the city, whether they be separately published prints or illustrations in newspapers, guidebooks, and the like. Written by John W. Reps, an expert on the history of urban planning and author of Views and Viewmakers of Urban America and Cities on Stone: Nineteenth Century Lithograph Images of the Urban West, the book collects over 100 illustrations of Washington, D.C. from the earliest days of the nation up to the date of the book's publication.
