Fascinating, uncommon map showing the track of the privateering voyage of George Gifford, the Earl of Cumberland, in 1598. Cumberland traveled to Puerto Rico, where he led an attack on the city and succeeded in briefly capturing Fort San Felipe del Morro (El Morro) from the land side of the fort, the only time that fort was taken in battle. However, dysentery overwhelmed his crew and they were forced to retreat after six weeks. This map shows Cumberland's voyage to and from the Caribbean, with North America shown with a very elongated St. Lawrence River ending in one massive, open-ended lake. South America is shown with the fictional lake Parime on the Equator. Published in van der Aa's compilation of early voyages of exploration.
