Matthaus Merian's 21 volume history of Europe was published over an incredible 103-year span from 1635 to 1738. The title pages and frontispieces were symbolizing the ravages of war and the costs of victory. Flanking the title are Bellona and Pax, the Roman goddesses of War and Peace. Chronus (Father Time) and Memoria, the personification of Memory, with two heralding putti filling the top of the engraving. This title page introduced the period between 1647 and 1651, in which both the Thirty Years War in the Holy Roman Empire and the Eighty Years War between Spain and the Dutch Republic were ended in the Peace of Westphalia.
