This fine twelve-inch terrestrial desk globe is created with 24 copper engraved and hand colored gores. It is surmounted by a brass hour disc at the North Pole with a full bronze meridian. The globe is raised on a turned three legged mahogany stand with three support arms and central support. Overall the globe stands just over 19" tall. The horizon band features a colored paper ring showing degrees of amplitude and azimuth, compass directions, days and months of the year, and the names of the signs of the zodiac. The large analemma is "An Improved Analemma shewing the SUN'S declination and place in the Zodiac for every day of the Year."

The globe shows significant amount of new information from the explorations of Lewis & Clark. The tracks of major voyages of discovery are shown and labeled. Antarctic is blank with the furthest south notation "Firm Fields & Vast Mountains of Ice" well beyond the Antarctic Circle. Full rectangular cartouche reads: "NEWTONS'/ NEW & IMPROVED/ TERRESTRIAL GLOBE/ Embracing every recent/ Discovery/ to the Present Time/ Manufactured by J. & W. NEWTON/ 65 Chancery Lane." and below the cartouche "London Published July 1823." An early and exceptional example of Newton's globe.
