A fine, bird's-eye plan of the fortifications of Vienna, without information on the city streets and buildings except for St. Stephen's Cathedral, the symbol of Vienna's freedom. Fortifications include walls, batteries, abutments, towers, and the extensive moats filled from the Danube. Prior to the great Battle of Vienna (1683) between the Austrian Habsburgs and the Ottoman Empire, the Viennese demolished the houses around the city walls and cleared the debris, leaving an empty plain that would expose the Turks to defensive fire. The Turks then dug an extensive network of defensive trenches to help protect them as they advanced toward the city. These trenches are depicted east of the city.
