This is a very scarce map of Portugal with the various regions, towns, fortified cities, rivers, and mountains intricately depicted. The map is beautifully composed with large cartouches filling opposite corners. The title cartouche is emblazoned across a drape held aloft by putti, more putti display the arms of Portugal and Algarve, and Neptune reclines on the distance scale and key cartouche. These exquisite decorative elements and the gold-highlighted original color make this one of the most visually impressive maps available to collectors of this region. Johannes de Ram is a little know Dutch cartographer who published from Amsterdam in the latter part of the 17th century. He produced only a few maps of his own design, this map of Portugal being among them.

Condition: A

Crisp, early impression and superb original color with gold highlights. The bottom margin is narrow (1/8") as issued. There is an old repair on the bottom centerfold separation and there are a few insignificant spots, but the superb coloring makes the map an extremely fine example.
