This is a superb view of the Dutch capture of a Spanish silver fleet in the Bay of Matanzas on the Cuban coast in 1628. Admiral Hein, whose portrait graced the view, captured over eleven million guilders worth of booty in gold, silver, and other trade goods without any bloodshed and set the Spanish crews off with ample supplies for a march to Havana. The captured treasure was the greatest Dutch victory in the Caribbean during the Eighty Years' War, or Dutch War of Independence. Commelin's engraving is based on a broadside by Nicolas Visscher (1628).
