This rare map is bound into the original "A Geological History of Manhattan or New York Island, Together with a Map of the Island, and a Suite of Sections, Tables and Columns, for the Study of Geology Particularly Adapted for the American Student," 1843, published and printed by W.E. Dean, 2 Ann St., New York. The folding geological map uses hand coloring and engraved line to identify eight geological formations on Manhattan Island. The map extends from Bedlows and Ellis islands northeast along the Hudson to show all of Manhattan. The two matching panels below provide a cross-section of the formations, also colored, and at bottom an elevation plan of the island. Cozzens' geological map was the first detailed attempt at such a map of the city and was published the same year as Mather's large "Geological Map of Long and Staten Islands" which also covered Manhattan Island, though in less detail. With eight beautifully colored full-page cross-section engravings including Staten Island, Hudson River and Palisades, plus the outlying areas of Donderberg, Niagara Falls, and Rhode Island. In original blind stamped brown cloth. Octavo, 114 pp. 8 plates of geological sections, and folding geological map of Manhattan. Cozzens prepared his geological history of New York City while employed as librarian of the New York Lyceum.
