The frontispiece is a superb allegorical engraving centered around Clio, the muse of history. Most famous for his standard work on Dutch numismatics, Gerard van Loon (1683-1758) was also a well-known historian. In this work he combines early Dutch history with his expertise on coins and medals. The engraving on the title page features Kronos with his hourglass and sickle. The lot includes a secondary text only title page.
