"[Lot of 4 - Washington DC]",

A nice set of thematic maps produced by the Engineer Department of D.C and included in their annual report of 1894. The first three were published to show the large-scale improvements in the infrastructure of the city. The title of these three begins with "Map of the City of Washington ..." with each drawn on an identical scale, showing the street pattern of Washington in great detail. Each has a specialized focus, with the titles continuing: 1) "… Showing the Varieties of Street Pavements"; 2) "… Showing Sewers"; and 3) "… Showing the System of Water Supply and Distribution." Each is colored to match its thematic legend. The first map is particularly handsome as it uses seven colors to indicate types of road surface. The fourth map, "Map Showing Suburban Subdivisions of the District of Columbia" (26.5 x 22") is mostly black and white with green overprinting to highlight parks, observatories, institutes, asylums, the Soldier's Home, and other government facilities. An important set of maps that provide a remarkable look into the capital's infrastructure in the mid-1890's.
