An uncommon map of Scotland filled with pictorial representations of topography and a multitude of place-names. The right side of the map is inset with maps of the Orkney, Shetland and Faeroe islands. The decorative cartouche contains a dedication to James Stuart, known variously as James III and the Old Pretender. He was born in 1688, but the same year his father, the Catholic James II was chased off of the British throne and replaced with Protestant William III of Orange. James III tried unsuccessfully to regain the throne for many years, as did his son, Bonnie Prince Charlie. France, Spain, Modena and the Papal States refused to recognize King William III, Queen Mary II or Queen Anne as the legitimate British sovereign until 1713.
