"A Passage by Land to California Discover'd by ye Rev. Fathr. Eusebius Francis Kino Jesuite between ye Years 1698 & 1701 [map in The Philosophical Transactions…]", Kino, Eusebio Francisco, SJ

This is an English version of Father Kino's important map that disproved the theory that California is an island. This was the first map to accurately depict the region, in particular the relative positions of the Colorado and Gila rivers and the correct location of the rivers, valleys and mountains of part of Sonora and Arizona. Kino's publication, first issued in 1705, was intended to disprove the island theory, but instead actually fueled the controversy and thus the map was reprinted many times. This scarce map is essential to any collection of California or the American Southwest, and this example is more desirable as it is still bound in its equally scarce source book.

This version was engraved by Hulett. Plate IX, Vol. V, P. 2 page 192 is in the upper left border. The map is still bound in the original "The Philosophical Transactions (From the Year 1700 to the Year 1720) Abridg'd and Dispos'd under General Heads, by Henry Jones, M.A. and Fellow of King's College in Cambridge. Vol. V. Containing Part I. The Anatomical and Medical Papers. Part II. The Philological and Miscellaneous Papers." The book contains numerous engravings (two great medical engravings) and a couple maps including one showing Spain and the Straights of Gibraltar, and another titled, "A Map of the New Philippine Islands." The two parts are bound together with brown calf boards, 435pp (Part I), 268pp (Part II), General Index.

Condition: A

The Kino map is near fine with just a hint of toning in upper margin. Deckled edges side and bottom. The book has rubbed covers with rear cover board detached. Other plates are generally very good to fine, text pages with some offsetting or foxing.
