This is the important, early and extensive history of the Caribbean focused on Santo Domingo. Includes a large amount of material on the indigenous and Negro populations. The volumes cover the years 1492 through 1724. This is the smaller format reprint of the 1730-31 quarto edition. Includes a good set of folding maps and charts covering Santo Domingo, Haiti, Venezuela, and the entire Caribbean area. Hardbound in full leather, with raised spines, gilt tooling, and embossed titles. Four books bound in two volumes. Charlevoix was a French Jesuit who spent time in Quebec, St. Louis and New Orleans before arriving in Santo Domingo. Each Tome contains frontispiece and title page, text, maps and views.

Condition: A

Original full leather with some small cracks at spine. Contents are very good, signatures tight. All maps are generally very good or good with fine impression and sound paper. Some with light offsetting or toning. Book plate on verso of title page.
