This book shows some of the finest sea charts, from the earliest 15th century examples, drawn and painted on parchment, to 18th century hand-colored copperplate engravings. All are superbly reproduced in full color and accompanied with a thorough commentary by leading Dutch authority Robert Putman. Also discusses the invention of the compass by the Arabs in the 12th century and explains the projection of the terrestrial globe on a flat surface. 143 pp., 80 full-color illustrations.
