Subject: Atlases

Period: 1789 (circa)

5.5 x 8 inches
14 x 20.3 cm

Extremely rare pocket atlas from Van Esveldt and Holtrop. Atlas appears to be complete with 41 double-page engraved and hand colored maps. There is, however, no title page or list of maps and from the binding it is not apparent that they were ever present. All maps carry the signature of Van Esveldt or Holtrop. Includes World and continents, but Asia is not present. Balance are countries with some lovely maps including Ceylon, Arabia, Japan, Indonesia, Tuscany, Naples, etc. Apparently original binding with paper boards and brown leather spine and corners. Very fine 18th Century pocket atlas with the maps in beautiful condition.

References: Not in Phillips.

Condition: A

Maps are generally fine to very good. All maps on large sheets of clean hand-laid paper with huge margins. Small portion of previous owners bookplate on inside paste down.

Estimate: $2,750 - $3,400
