Rolla M. Tryon designed this historical pictorial map of the United States in the early stages of its colonization. With the exception of Florida, the Eastern Seaboard is labeled "Claimed by England," with the claims of the Plymouth Company and the London Company both delineated. An extended note off the coast of Virginia notes that the territorial extent of the colony has been left vague on the map due to the lack of specificity in the Virginia Charter of 1609. French claims are shown along the St. Lawrence River and around the Great Lakes. Spanish claims run from Baja California across the South to Florida. The rest of the country belongs to the Indigenous peoples, with the names of various tribes printed in red across their territories. Illustrations include a Powhatan village, a Seminole village, an Iroquois long house, a Pawnee starting a fire, a Pueblo village, a Navajo basket weaver, wild life, and portraits of Indigenous people. Merchant ships and galleons appear in the ocean. The map was published as part of a series of 9 illustrated wall maps designed for schools by Tryon, Professor of the Teaching of History at the University of Chicago. This present example is dissected and mounted on linen, with three metal rings across the top for hanging. It folds into dark blue boards (8.7 x 10.7") with gilt title on spine.
