This is the first edition of this map, which was later re-issued by the Typographia Seminary in Padua and again by Pierre Mortier. It shows northern Turkey and the vast network of trade routes between various towns and cities. The Romans and King Mithradates of Pontus had several battles over this important region during the Mithridatic Wars, with the Roman general Pompey the Great finally defeating the king in 62 BC.
A dark impression with contemporary outline color and later wash color on a bright sheet with the watermark of a fleur-de-lis and the initials "DA." There is minor marginal soiling and a faint dampstain along the bottom edge of the sheet.
