This is a rare German edition of Lapie's map of northern North America, with a large Polar Sea at center extending to Iceland in the east and to Siberia in the west. The map was originally issued in Nouvelles Annales des Voyages in 1821 and is notable for depicting the fictional accounts of a Northwest Passage by Maldonado (1588), Admiral de Fonte (1640) and Captain Bernarda (1640). Locates the sea as actually seen by both Hearne (1771) and Mackenzie (1789), and displays an elaborate system of rivers, lakes, and bays with rugged topography throughout. There are no past auction records for this map and only two dealer listings in the last 30 years.
