A fine, scarce engraving showing the legendary city of Babylon, the most important city of Mesopotamia, whose name is thought to mean the gate of the gods. The meticulously laid-out city is surrounded by walls and canals with the Euphrates flowing through the center. The magnificent palaces, sanctuaries and tower of Babel are all depicted. In the foreground the road leading to the city is filled with elephants, camels, merchants and shepherds.
