Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library is a monument to Victorian industry and zeal for natural history education. Sir William Jardine (1800-1874) owned the finest private natural history museum and library in Britain and made the study of natural history widely available by editing and issuing The Naturalist's Library in forty small, well-illustrated, and relatively affordable volumes on birds, mammals, fish, and insects. This volume, written by James Duncan and edited by Jardine covers beetles. The thirty plates, plus frontispiece, are all beautifully engraved and hand colored by the firm of W.H. Lizars. 269 pp. Hardbound in red cloth covered boards with gilt lettering.
