"[Illuminated Leaf]", Anon.

A very old vellum leaf from small French Bible. Though the Bible was organized into a single volume in the 13th century it was not until the 15th century that it was divided into verses. The text is finely written in two columns with headings at the top of the page. Blue and red initials mark the beginning of each chapter. This leaf is from the book of Numeri, chapters 31 through 33. The only decorations are the headings of the pages, Numeri, in red and blue; the numbers of the chapters, XXXII and XXXIII; and two initials, the 'F' from filii at the beginning of chapter 32 and the 'H' from hae in 33. Throughout the text there are red rubrics.
