"Chalcopahis Sclateri", Gould, John

Beautiful pair of Sclater's Monals or Crestless Monals. These pheasants, native to Tibet, China, and Burma are now a vary rare endangered species. The crown is bluish green, the sides of the neck are metallic reddish bronze; the facial skin is blue. The rest of the upper parts metallic green, blue and black. A most noticeable feature is the white back and rump that extends to a broad chestnut band on the tail which is tipped with white. John Gould created some of the most beautiful bird prints ever produced and was known throughout the world as "The Bird Man". These superb, hand colored, stone lithographs are from his last great work. During his long career Gould employed the best lithographers to transfer his sketches onto stone. This plate is the work of H. C. Richter.
