"Orbis Terrae Compendiosa Descriptio ex ea, quam ex Magna Universali Mercator Rumoldus fieri curabat in hac comodiore forma a Hieron: Porro redact:", Mercator/Magini

This double hemisphere world map is derived from the 1587 world map by Rumold Mercator and set within a similar strapwork background. The map was engraved by Girolamo Porro for Giovanni Magini and included in several of Magini's works. This later edition has been considerably improved and updated according to Hondius and Blaeu particularly in South America, New Guinea, and "Australis Incognita". The area to the north of the peninsular California has been slightly revised, leaving it blank, but suggesting the possibility of a landmass. Although Shirley, under entry 202, suggests the 1597 plate moved to Amsterdam and was published in 1642 by Jakobsz, this appears to be a completely new plate, with slightly different border design in addition to the improved geography. It does not seem to be classified elsewhere. The map is finely engraved with stippled sea area, text in Latin below and blank verso.
