Scarce map from an edition of Sebastian Munster's "Cosmographia" which was translated into French and published by Francois de Belle-Forest. The map is a woodcut version of Ortelius's 1570 world map. The oval projection is surrounded by clouds with the title contained in a strapwork banner across the top. Where Ortelius included a quotation from Cicero in the banner at bottom, Belle-Forest replaced that with "Description universelle de tout le Monde". South America is shown with the bulge in the southwest coast, a huge southern continent spans the polar region, and the north polar region depicts a northern sea passage on the Mercator model. Issued with close margins and folding with the binder's instruction as a tab in the top left corner. Shirley lists this as scarce as the map was not republished after 1575. $5,000 RESERVE
