This exquisite engraving of a water rail appeared in the third volume of Nederlandsche Vogelen. Published in 5 volumes from 1770 to 1829, Nederlandsche Vogelen is an early landmark natural history work covering the avi-fauna of the Netherlands. The third volume featured engraving work by Jan Christaan Sepp and his son Jan and text by Martinus Houttuyn, taking over for Cornelius Nozeman.
