"[Lot of 2] [The Dutch Fleet Attack the Spanish Fortress of Gratiosa on Gran Canaria] [and] [Attack of Dutch Fleet Commanded by Pieter van der Does Sacking Gran Canaria in 1599]", Gottfried, J.L.
This pair of engravings was published in Johann Ludwig Gottfried's Historia Antipodum, an abridgement of De Bry's voyages to America that incorporated much new material. Matthaus Merian, de Bry's son-in-law and publisher for Historia Antipodum, was granted access to de Bry's copper-engraved plates and also engraved several new plates. The first engraving shows a Dutch fleet attacking the Spanish fortress of Gratiosa on Gran Canaria. It was originally published in Johann Theodore de Bry's America das ist Erfindung und Offenbahrung der Newen Welt, published by Philip Zigler in 1617, which was an abridgement of the first nine parts of Theodore de Bry's Grands Voyages. The second engraving depicts the raid on Spanish-controlled Las Palmas by Dutch admiral Pieter van der Does. Although part of the heavily fortified city was destroyed in the attack, the raiders were forced to retreat. On sheets of German text measuring 8.1 x 13.1".
