This fine view shows the Dutch Fort Oranje on the island of Itamaraca, off the northeast coast of Brazil. Native people appear at bottom right, and a key at bottom identifies the important sites. A ribbon-style title cartouche flies in the sky with a coat of arms featuring three bunches of grapes. This engraving was published in Caspar Barlaeus' Rerum per Octennium in Brasilia, which followed Count Johan Maurits van Nassau's journey in Brazil between 1636-1644.
