An uncommon and visually appealing map "done in the old style" with decorative galleons, sea monsters, and an elaborate compass rose in the oceans. Southern Pacific's Shasta Route, Overland Route, Golden State Route and Sunset Route are marked in red and black, "following the trails of the pioneers, they are the best natural routes to the land of scenery and romance." The left and right borders are composed of vignette illustrations of historical events starting with "1862 President Lincoln signs Pacific Railway Act" to "Today Southern Pacific still building and serving." Four vignette illustrations at top relate to the four routes. Southern Pacific lines run as far south as Guadalajara. Illustrated by J.E. Patterson of Patterson & Sullivan, a San Francisco art firm.
