This pair of facsimile atlases resurrects the first two volumes of The Burning Fen by Arent Roggeveen, originally published in Amsterdam in 1675 and 1687. These facsimiles are Volumes V and VI of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Series of Atlases in Facsimile Fifth Series. Published by Pieter Goos, The Burning Fen is described in Professor Ir C. Koeman's introduction as "one of the most important printed pilot books." With its charts of Central American coastlines and islands, it was the first pilot book to include non-European coasts. This book features 70 pages of text and 34 black and white double-page charts (and many more textual illustrations). The second volume was originally published by Jacob Robijn and covers the coasts of western Africa and Brazil. This book features 40 pagees of text and 18 double-page charts. Elephant folio, blue cloth covered boards with gilt insignia on the cover and title on spine, and illustrated dust jackets protected by Mylar.


Condition: A

Contents are very good. Covers have minor soiling, and volume 2 has slightly bumped corners. Dust jackets are lightly soiled with some shelf wear.
